Jokers in American Mahjong: What They Can and Cannot Do
September 16, 2026
Jokers are the engine of American Mahjong. They are also the rule new players break first. A joker can stand in for a missing tile inside a pung, a kong, or a quint. It cannot be a lone tile. It cannot be one half of a pair. The card can write a rare exception; the default is no.
When you may use a joker
- Pung: three of a kind. One or two jokers are legal if the rest are the natural tile.
- Kong: four of a kind. Same rule. Calling a discard for a kong still needs a replacement tile from the back of the wall.
- Quint: five of a kind. Almost every quint on the card needs at least one joker.
The exchange
If another player exposes a set that contains a joker, and you hold the natural tile that joker is pretending to be, you may exchange that natural tile for the joker on your turn. You do not take the discard. You swap. It is the cleanest way to rescue a hand that looks dead.
Never pass a joker in the Charleston. Never discard a joker unless the table’s card and house rules have left you no other tile — and say so out loud. Most nights, you keep it.
