American Mahjong Table Setup: Racks, Walls, and Room to Pass

September 23, 2026

American Mahjong needs more table than a deck of cards. Four racks, a two-tile-high wall, a card, and elbows. If the wall collapses every time someone reaches for a glass, the room is wrong — not the players.

Minimum footprint

A standard dining table is enough if you clear the centerpiece. Each player needs a rack plus discard space toward the middle. The card sits where all four can read it without standing up — usually on a small stand or a fifth space, not in someone’s lap.

  • Build the wall two tiles high, even and tight. A sloppy wall is how tiles chip.
  • Keep drinks off the mat. One spill dulls a whole suit of faces.
  • Leave a path for the Charleston. Hands have to reach right, across, and left.

Light and noise

Overhead light beats a dim lamp behind one player. Green bams and pale soaps disappear in yellow gloom. If the room is loud, call discards a little slower, not a little louder. The table is listening for the name of the tile.

When the setup is right, you forget the furniture. That is the goal: racks that stay put, a wall that does not walk, and a set you do not have to pack before midnight.
