American Mahjong vs Chinese Mahjong: Same Tiles, Different Night

September 24, 2026

American Mahjong and Chinese Mahjong share Bams, Craks, and Dots. That is where the family resemblance ends. If you buy the wrong set, the first night becomes an argument about missing jokers instead of a game.

The short comparison

  • American: 160 tiles including blanks, jokers, eight Flowers, and the current NMJL card. You complete one printed line.
  • Chinese: usually 144 tiles, no jokers in the classic deal, no yearly card. You build four sets and a pair from shapes you already know.
  • American opens with the Charleston. Chinese deals the wall and starts.
  • American scores the number on the card. Chinese scores fan that change by city.

Which listing are you looking at

If the box says 144 tiles and never mentions jokers, it is almost always Chinese or a travel set. You can invent house rules. You cannot run a standard American table. For a U.S. living room that already owns this year’s card, buy American.
