What to Look For in an American Mahjong Set
June 11, 2026
A good American set is less about a logo and more about whether four people still want to deal another wall at 11 p.m. Look at the tiles in your hand, not just the photo on the box.
Count the tiles first
You need 160 tiles for a standard American set, including blanks: 160, not 144. Confirm Jokers, eight Flowers, and blank replacement tiles. If a listing is vague about jokers or counts only 152, it is often omitting the blanks — or it is a Chinese or travel set wearing American marketing.
Read the sides, not only the faces
Engraved or inlaid faces last longer than ink that sits on the surface. Color on the edges helps you spot suits across the table. Racks should hold a full hand without tiles sliding when someone laughs. A pusher is a luxury; sturdy racks are not.
- Acrylic tiles stay bright and clean easily; they should not feel sharp on the thumb.
- A case that actually fits the racks saves the set from living in two grocery bags.
- Leave room for this year’s card. Cards change. The set should not fight that.
Pretty enough to leave out is a real test. If the set has to hide in a closet, it gets used twice a year. The sets that stay on the sideboard get played.
