The Courtesy Pass and the Second Charleston
September 30, 2026
The first Charleston is not a suggestion: three tiles right, three across, three left. After that, American tables add two optional layers that confuse every new guest. Name them before the first pass so nobody feels ambushed.
Courtesy pass
Across the table, you may pass up to three tiles. You may pass none. You do not owe a matching count. It is a last edit before the wall, not a fourth mandatory Charleston.
Second Charleston
- If the table wants another round, reverse the compass: left, across, right.
- Anyone may decline. You do not vote a reluctant player into a second pass.
- You still never pass a joker.
Write it on a slip behind the card: first Charleston always, courtesy optional, second Charleston by consent. Consistency is what makes a pickup table feel like a club.
