Gifting an American Mahjong Set Without Guessing Wrong

An American Mahjong set is a good gift only if it matches the night they already have — or the night they have been meaning to start. Ask two questions: do they play the NMJL card, and do they have racks. Everything else is color.

If they already play

They may want a second set that can stay on the sideboard, or racks that do not slide, or a mat so the dining table stops getting scratched. Do not buy another 144-tile Chinese set “because the tiles looked similar.” Count to 160. Name the jokers.

If they are starting

• Include a current card or a note that they must buy this year’s card.
• Choose tiles they will not hide in a closet. Gift sets get used when they look like furniture.
• Add a link to a rules page. The box insert is rarely enough.

Color is personal. Leopard, mint, champagne, peach — pick the one that matches their table, not the one that won a photo. The best gift is the set that is still out in March.
