How Long Does a Game of American Mahjong Take?
October 10, 2026
People skip American Mahjong because they think it is an all-day tournament. A single wall — deal, Charleston, play until someone goes mahjong or the wall dies — is an evening unit, not a weekend.
Realistic timing
- First Charleston and courtesy pass: five to ten minutes when the table is new, faster when it is not.
- A hand: often twenty to forty minutes. Beginners run longer because they reread the card.
- A social night: two or three walls, then leftover pie and the dishes.
How to keep it from sprawling
Deal before the last story. Call discards clearly so nobody asks “what was that” twice. Pick two card families after the pass instead of shopping the whole sheet. If one player is learning, play the first wall as a teaching wall and the second as a real one.
Tell guests “we play two games” the way you would tell them dinner is at seven. A bounded night gets a fourth chair. An unbounded night gets cancellations.
