How to Find an American Mahjong Group Near You
October 5, 2026
American Mahjong is easier to learn at a standing table than from a box insert. In the United States the game clusters around the NMJL card: community centers, libraries, temple sisterhoods, condo clubhouses, and living rooms that already have four racks.
Where tables actually are
- Ask the public library and the parks-and-rec catalog. Many list “mahjong” next to bridge.
- Senior centers and Jewish community centers often have daytime American games.
- Nextdoor, local Facebook groups, and Meetup: search “American mahjong” or “mah jongg,” not only “mahjong.”
- If you already own a set, offer to host the first month. Fourth seats appear when the furniture is ready.
Ask this before you sit
Do they play the current National Mah Jongg League card. A “mahjong night” can be Chinese rules, Wright-Patterson, or a family hybrid. Bring your card anyway. If the table is American, you are fluent on day one. If it is not, you will know before East rolls.
