What Is American Mahjong?

September 14, 2026

American Mahjong is a four-player tile game built around a yearly card from the National Mah Jongg League. You are not inventing a winning shape from memory. You are completing one printed line on that card, using a 160-tile set (including blanks), jokers, and a passing round called the Charleston.

How it differs from “regular” mahjong

Chinese and Japanese tables often build four sets and a pair from rules you already know. An American table keeps the card in the middle. The legal hands change every year. Flowers and jokers are part of the standard deal. Racks stay up. The night is social before the first wall tile is drawn.

  • Win condition: one exact line on the current NMJL card.
  • Set size: 160 tiles, including blanks, plus eight Flowers and jokers.
  • Opening: the Charleston — three-tile passes. You never pass a joker.
  • Scoring: the values printed on the card, not a regional fan table.

What you need for a first night

Four people, one current card, one American set, and racks that actually hold a full hand. If a listing says 144 tiles and no jokers, it is usually a Chinese or travel set. For a U.S. living-room table that wants the card and the Charleston, buy American.

If you are still mapping the turn order, start with the table-side how-to-play guide, then leave the set out. The nights that stay on the sideboard are the ones that get a second wall.
