Common American Mahjong Mistakes (and How the Table Fixes Them)
September 21, 2026
American Mahjong looks complicated because the card is public and the talk is loud. Most mistakes are the same four. Name them once and the table gets kinder.
The usual four
- Passing a joker in the Charleston. Never. The joker stays on your rack.
- Calling a discard to complete a pair, except to declare mahjong. Pairs are quiet.
- Using a joker as a single. The card will almost never allow it.
- Hunting ten lines at once. After the Charleston, pick a family.
Talk that helps, talk that does not
Call the discard clearly. Do not narrate someone else’s hand. Do not “remind” the table of a rule you just learned unless you are sure. If you expose a set by mistake, the table decides together — most home games rewind one tile, not the whole wall.
If the same four people play twice a month, write your house rules on a card behind the NMJL card: courtesy pass optional, second Charleston by consent, phones down. Consistency is what makes a beginner stay.
