Buying a Used American Mahjong Set
October 12, 2026
Used American sets show up at estate sales, Facebook Marketplace, and aunt-to-niece handoffs. Some are perfect. Some are Chinese sets wearing an English listing. Shop the count before you shop the story.
The inspection
- 160 tiles including blanks. Ask for a photo of the jokers and the Flowers.
- Faces you can read across a table. Worn ink on slick acrylic will not get better.
- Four racks if they claim it is a complete table set.
- A current card is a bonus, not a reason to overpay. Cards are cheap. Tiles are not.
When to walk away
144 tiles, “vintage Chinese,” or a seller who cannot find the jokers. Cracked racks you cannot replace. A smell that will not leave a closed case. Sentiment is allowed. Pretending it is a full American set is not.
If you want one night this month, a new acrylic set with a known count is often cheaper than a “rare” box that needs replacement tiles. Leave the heirloom hunt for when you already have a set that plays.
