How Many Tiles Are in an American Mahjong Set?
September 15, 2026
A standard American Mahjong set has 160 tiles, including blanks. That count is the fastest way to tell an American listing from a Chinese 144-tile set or a Japanese 136-tile riichi set wearing the word “mahjong” in the title.
What the 160 includes
- Bams, Craks, and Dots: 1–9, four of each.
- Winds and Dragons (Red, Green, White/Soap).
- Eight Flowers.
- Jokers — the wild tiles that make American hands possible.
- Blank replacement tiles. They are part of the 160, not extras in a bag.
Why some boxes say 152 or 144
A listing that counts only 152 is often omitting the blanks. A listing at 144 is usually a Chinese set: no jokers in the classic deal, and no yearly card. You can still play house rules on 144 tiles. You cannot honestly call it a complete American set.
When you shop, read the tile count before the photos. Then confirm jokers and flowers are named, not implied. A pretty rack does not fix a short wall.
