Mahjong Racks and Pushers: What an American Table Actually Needs
October 8, 2026
American Mahjong is played on racks. Hands stay upright, exposures face the table, and nobody is cupping fourteen tiles like a secret. If a gift set arrives without racks, buy the racks before you buy a second colorway.
Racks
You need four. They should be long enough for a full American hand plus a discarded tile on the end, and heavy enough that a sneeze does not dump the Flowers. Soft lining helps acrylic stop clicking. Matching the tiles is optional. Matching the table is nicer.
Pushers
- A pusher is the sliding tray that builds and breaks the wall without fingers walking the tiles.
- Useful on a slick table or a large mat. Not required for a first night.
- If you only buy one upgrade after the set, buy racks. Pushers are second.
Guests who “don’t need racks” will need them by the courtesy pass. Put four on the table before anyone sits.
