What Is a Soap in American Mahjong?

September 26, 2026

Soap is the American name for the White Dragon. It often looks like a clean rectangle with a faint frame. Beginners discard it as a spare blank. It is not a blank. It is not a joker. It is a Dragon, and the card uses it constantly.

Soap versus blanks versus jokers

  • Soap: White Dragon. It belongs to Dragon lines and to any recipe that prints a white Dragon.
  • Blanks: unmarked replacement tiles for a cracked face. They are not in play unless you have agreed they stand in for a missing tile.
  • Jokers: wild inside a pung, kong, or quint. They cannot pretend to be Soap as a single or a pair.

How to keep them straight at the table

If the tile has even a thin border or a soap-like panel, treat it as White Dragon until someone proves otherwise. True blanks are empty. If your set’s Soap and blanks look too alike, mark the case once so guests do not donate a Dragon to the dead wall.
